Supersonic Sesame


These seeds are probably the first oil seed known to mankind as these are the oldest seeds in the world. They are power packed seeds providing a plethora of benefits.


Sesame seeds are highly rich in essential nutrients and contain several nutrients that have stress relieving properties. Thiamine (Vitamin B1) has calming properties that aid in proper nerve functioning which helps to cure anxiety. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is involved in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that reduces pain and regulates mood and sleep pattern.


They contain magnesium and other nutrients which help lower the blood pressure and plasma glucose in hypersensitive diabetics. Sesame seed are great for our cardiovascular health also as they contain mono-unsaturated fatty acid, & oleic acid which helps in lowering the bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol in the body. They also contain an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that helps to keep the heart healthy.


Sesame seeds (black) being rich in iron are highly recommended for those suffering from anaemia and weakness. Minerals like magnesium and calcium in them regulate muscle function. Magnesium contained in sesame seeds also prevents asthma and other respiratory disorders. Magnesium also has anti-cancer properties. They also contain another anti-cancer compound called phytate that prevents cancer.


They are a good source of dietary protein with high quality of amino acids making up to 20% of the seed. Sesame seeds support a healthy digestive system as they are rich in fibre. They contain copper – a mineral that is very important for antioxidant enzyme system. Thus, they help reduce the pain and swelling associated with arthritis, as minerals provides strength to the blood vessels, bones and joints. Sesame seed oil boosts oral as well as liver health.


Sesame is rich in powerful antioxidant and possesses antibacterial and antiviral properties. It offers several benefits to our skin. The oil extracted from sesame seeds is rich in Omega 3, Omega 6, Omega 9, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and Vitamin B & E – all these are very widely used in natural cosmetics, for skin care as well as hair growth. The regular usage of this oil significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer and prevents the skin from the effect of chlorine in swimming pool water and it works a very effective sunscreen too (Sesamol found in seeds has been found to prevent DNA from being damaged by radiation).


So, add this Til (sesame seed) in your regular diet. Sprinkle them on sorts of dishes – from salads to curries & veggies to parathas & cakes; mix it with jaggery and eat as til-papdi or til-laddoo; grind it up for tahini; or even better use the cold compressed til/ gingelly oil and avail the super benefits.
